All people come across advocacy every day. A person whom attends a new situation with a friend is being an advocate for the friend. Parents are advocates of their children by standing up for them. Children are advocates of their friends by standing up for them. Advocacy is about helping a person by taking his her side within a given situation. Advocacy is about helping people who are in jeopardy of being pushed to the limits of society.
A specific population whom can use the help of advocates is individuals with disabilities. Goals and priorities of advocates for people with disabilities include the following:
• Advocates represent people with disabilities to secure their human and legal rights.
• Advocates inform all individuals about the rights of people with disabilities.
• Integration of people with disabilities into the community.
• Improve healthcare access to individuals with disabilities.
• Helping individuals with disabilities obtain employment.
People with disabilities have the same rights as other citizens to freedom, equal protection under the law, and control over their own lives. If individuals with disabilities are to be completely included as citizens within a community, these rights need to be honored. An advocate for a disabled individual can promote these rights and help ensure that the person’s rights are honored.
As an advocate for individuals with disabilities, one would work to improve healthcare access. All individuals with disabilities should be able to access healthcare services that meet their own unique needs. These services should be affordable, accessible, and available. An advocate would also help the disabled individual locate the necessary services that will allow the individual to be able to live in the community of his or her choice.
