Alternative Dispute Resolution
In 1920, the state of New York enacted the first modern arbitration statute in the United States of America. Dubbed the New York State Arbitration statute, it served lawmakers of the state to authorize the enforcement of arbitration agreements made by parties who wished to settle their disputes outside of the court system. The statute was a model for the Federal Arbitration Act adopted by Congress in 1925 (New York, 2007).
