An Inspector Calls- Arthur Birling Analysis

In the time that ‘An Inspector Calls' is set, a lot is going on in the world. 1912 was the year that the Titanic sunk, women were subservient to men and the rift between the rich and the poor was forever growing. The way the world was back then influences the character I have chosen largely. Arthur Birling is an incredibly arrogant and pompous man. He looks out for number one regardless to the people that surround him. His only concerns are his social standing, money and of course, himself.
The play itself is originates around the dining room for most of the time. I think this is good as it allows you to familiarise yourself with each character and their general persona. -this is the set used for Fran Manhires production of ‘An Inspector Calls' performed in Exeter, March 2002.
I think this is a good example of what the set for the play should look like. It has a very good layout, you need to be able to see the whole cast and I think that this set is sufficient. There is lots of space vital if the entire play circulates around this room.
Birling should be dressed in the suitable attire; dinner jacket, top hat, etc.
Arthur Birling owns a company, Birling and Co. He is very proud of this and all his other achievements. He claims that the evening that the play is set on is ‘one of the happiest nights of my life' I suspect he says this because the merging of Birling and Co. and Crofts Limited will be good for business.
Birling seems to be a great believer of making your own way in life. We know this because on page 9 he claims ‘a man has to make his own way- has to look after himself'
Birling, in general, is arrogant, rude and money grabbing. He has a very high opinion of himself and continually boasts to Inspector Goole by telling him that he was Mayor a few years back and then goes on to try and impress Goole by telling him about his ‘connections' and influential friends.
