And The Band Played On

As I sat and watched this movie my heart went out to the families that have had to endure through this disease. When the disease was first discovered there was no name, no cause and no cure. To this date we now at least have a name and a cause but, still no cure. I have never truly understood the background of the disease. This movie had such a strong impact on my outlook towards AIDS that I actually had to scrupulously decide on where my opinions would rest. I have always felt sorry for the people that had to go through any fatal process whether it is a disease or just death in anyway. Before I saw this movie I was under the impression that AIDS came from monkeys. I do not remember where I heard this or where I learned this I just always remembered that as my fact. After viewing this movie my opinion has obviously changed with great significance. I still do not completely understand where AIDS was derived from but I do understand that it was not from monkeys.
In my opinion the government and the newspapers down played the seriousness of the disease. They made it seem to the general public that this was a disease that was only affecting gay males. When in all actuality the first case was a White woman from Europe. I personally feel that the government did not do as good as a job as they could have in researching and treating the disease. If they would have not tried to hide the disease then it may not have killed as many people that it did. Even though the disease has a 100 % mortality rate, there are many lives that could have been prolonged. The government never wanted to contribute to the research, discovery or treatment of this disease. I believe that if more people would have been open minded then the disease and its spreading would not have ceased but would have slowed down a lot. I think that the government had a huge role in the fact that the disease was kept quite for so long. If the government wasn't so...
