Apple Osx Vs. Unix Os
paper comparing and contrasting the between the Apple OSX and Unix operating systems.
Apple OSX and UNIX operating systems have a lot in common. The Apple portion of the OSX Operating system mostly consists of a suite of Apple Corporation applications, and an Apple version of windows graphical user interface, running on a UNIX operating system named Darwin that is based on BSD (Berkley Software Development) UNIX. One interesting difference between the Apple OSX operating system and UNIX operating system is that although they are both UNIX operating systems the Apple OSX runs on an Intel CPU while most UNIX operating systems typically do not. FreeBSD which Apple OSX is based on does run on the Intel CPU. And, the Linux operating system is famous and popular for the fact that it first brought an operating system based on UNIX to the Intel based computer. Therefore, now Apple OSX, FreeBSD, and Linux now all have a lot in common.
Apple OSX may not be the only UNIX operating system to run on an Intel CPU but it now joins a small but growing crowd of UNIX based operating systems that run on the most popular CPU architecture in the world. Linux was the first open source port of the UNIX operating system to run on the Intel CPU but was renamed to Linux and has not been referred to as UNIX after being made to run on the Intel CPU. So therefore it is interesting the Apple OSX is considered to be UNIX running on an Intel CPU.
The Apple OSX operating system is wildly different from the command line only version of UNIX. But, the UNIX operating system with xwindows running on it is surprisingly similar to other operating systems which use “windows” as part of their graphical user interface. Apple who has a strong and loyal following has possibly created the perfect blend of a reliable technology with an easy to use nature. Today the average computer user isn’t a computer geek, but instead almost anyone as computers have...
