As I Lay Dying is a novel about a small country family that we come to know as the Bundrens. The Bundrens live on a farm in a small town in Mississippi where everybody knows everybody else and their business and neighbors are very close. This is manifest by the outpouring of assistance the Bundrens receive when the mother of the family, Addie Bundren, is on her death bed. Neighboors like the Tulls help the Bundrens in many ways: they cook, clean, do farm work and even check on Addie from time to time, however, the story itself is based on Addie.
