This paper will describe the analysis of one of my recent work related project called CIBER-Rearchitecture (CIBER Stands for Contracts Install Base Entitlement Repository). CIBER is an existing reporting layer with Maintenance Service Agreements and Install Base related data in the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) of Cisco that supports the BI (Business intelligence) reporting requirements of 12 business organizations within Cisco through 16 different data marts and application tools. Sourcing the data from Oracle 11i CRM application and other custom OLTP (Online Transaction Processing) applications, this reporting layer had grown up to 350 millions rows in many different tables causing lot of performance and database resource issues. The CIBER-Rearchitecture project was kicked off in an effort to improve the overall performance of this reporting layer by at least 40-50%.
Requirements
The following were the identified requirements of this project in order to achieve that objective.
Requirements Description
Functional Functionality of all the current applications should remain without any change while improving the performance
Technical 1. All applications performance to improve significantly (40-50%).
2. Devise an Archival & Purge (A&P) strategy to remove old data
Usability Usability of the applications to increase by 20% due to increased performance
GUI Underlying changes in GUI to be completed to utilize new structures to improve performance without changing the tools front-end appearance to the users
Times lines 1. 6 months time to complete the changes
2. Maximum of 2 hours data availability delay permitted due to increase in processing
