In “Cathedral” the narrator’s wife and Robert, the blind man, keep in touch by sending
audio tapes back and forth to each other. Over the years she has put just about everything on a
tape and has sent it off to Robert. In the beginning the basis for the tapes was her marital
troubles. And it seemed she had someone to talk to.
The narrator never seemed to be interested in what was in the tapes. Robert sent a tape to
the wife and mentioned her husband, the narrator. They sat down to listen to...
