In 1902, the United Mine Workers called a strike among its membership in the anthracite coal mines of eastern Pennsylvania. The workers demanded safer working conditions, higher pay and recognition of their union. The strike loomed on through the summer and into the fall. Businesses and schools were forced to close their doors due to a lack of coal needed for heating. Anti-management sentiment came to a head when word spread that George F. Baer, leader of the mine operators, had written to an associate that the miners had wrongly put their trust in the union, instead of in Christian men like himself, whom God had given control of the nation's property...
