Communications Processes & Principles
a. Linear communication is when the person who creates a message sends it via a communication mechanism to another person who receives and translates the message. If the message is sent via an electronic source there may be the noise factor that can distract from the message or disrupt the transmission. A voice mail message is one example of linear communication. When I receive a message on my voice mail there are times when the information is broken up and is very hard to understand and because this is linear communication I cannot ask them to repeat the message.
b. Transactional communication is when the person sending a message becomes the communicator along with the person receiving the message. Each person involved in this communication reacts with a response and these messages are sent and received simultaneously. Transactional communication can also demonstrate the unique qualities that individuals possess and share as part of the communication. Talking with your spouse on how you want to spend your next vacation is transactional communication. If you have been somewhere that your spouse hasn't you will want to discuss the benefits of why this place is so special.
c. Intentional communication is when you prepare yourself for what you want to say. When preparing to give a presentation you will be sure of every word you are going to speak about. By preparing yourself and planning your delivery it will make a big difference in how your audience will react. If you stumble over your words and are unsure and unprepared you will lose your audience as soon as you start.
d. Unintentional communication is when your nonverbal behavior or unintentional words are perceived by someone in the wrong way.
