Comparitive Essay On The Lottery And The Rocking Horse Winner
Both The Rocking-Horse Winner and The Destructors show how a lack of love, money and society feeds into gluttony as well as overtaking a person's ability to cease erroneous actions and their need to prove their worth.
There are many differences and similarities between D.H. Lawrence's "Rocking Horse Winner" and Graham Greene's "The Destructors. One similarity between the two stories is that in both stories the main character is a young boy with something to prove. However, each boy is on a completely different mission but still strangely comparable. A difference between the two stories is indeed location. The location of "The Rocking-Horse Winner" is set in a suburban town in a remote area of the United States whereas "The Destructors" takes place in England after World War II has taken place and heaved much destruction upon the characters city. The location difference does play a factor in the story in two distinct ways. In "The Rocking-Horse Winner" the location is just a backdrop but does not place a significant role in the theme of the story. This particular story can indeed take place in any other location as long as there is a horse racing track along the way. However in "The Destructors" the location is a main factor in the story. The story would not stand on its own without the backdrop of the rainy English war torn town in which this leaning home that withstood all the bombing exists.

The difference in the boys' character is while one's family is trying to fit into a higher society, the other is trying to escape it.
