Steve Kafka is an American of Czech origin and a franchisor of Chicago Style Pizza. Steve was born in the United States but he speaks Czech fluently and has visited the country on several occasions. He also has friends and family that live in the Czech Republic. Based on his connections to the area, he has made the risky decision to expand his business into Prague, Czech Republic. Is the knowledge that he has about the region sufficient enough to make such a business decision? This paper will examine cultural differences, possible comparative advantages the Czech Republic has to offer, Hofstede's cultural dimensions and how they will help Steve evaluate the business environment and the demand and cost structure of pizza.
Cultural Differences
Family is the center of social structure and obligation to family is first priority. Czechs are individualistic in that they maybe stubborn in stating opinions or wishes. However, Czech society emphasizes conformity and cooperation, and community leaders are held in high esteem (Czech Republic, 2007). Initial greetings are formal and most include a firm handshake with everyone including children. It is best practice to address an individual by their title and surname until invited or decided upon mutual to use the first name. Accepting a dinner invitation also involved bringing gifts to the host. Chocolates and flowers are most common, but caution needs to be used when giving flowers. Red roses are normally given and calla lilies are avoided because they are used at funerals. When eating, always use utensils. Note that very few items are eaten with the hands. Also, adhere to the European standard of the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hand (Country Watch, 2007). Czechs eat three meals a day and they are generally prepared by women.
