Delegation Paper
Pass the buck, a common phrase used for delegation. Although, this may seem to have a negative connotation, delegating can mean far more than simply passing off an unwanted task. Delegation can be a useful tool for various levels of management to conduct business efficiently and effectively. "The delegation process has five phases: (1) preparing, (2) planning, (3) discussing, (4) auditing, and (5) appreciating."(Gemmy Allen, 1998) When properly used, delegating can create more revenue for a business and the buck passed could bring more in return. I will demonstrate how the roofing company I work for uses delegation to carry out its normal daily functions.
Preparing
"Preparing includes establishing the objectives of the delegation, specifying the task that needs to be accomplished, and deciding who should accomplish it." (Gemmy Allen, 1998) As in most businesses, this phase begins with top management. The president of the company will determine what decisions can be passed on subordinates to leave only ones that must be made by him/herself. This lowers the president's task load so that they will be more inept to make strategic decisions. There are several major factors to consider when running a roofing company: management, purchases, financials, quality control, maintenance, and customer satisfaction just to name a few. In order to operate efficiently each of these must run smoothly and simultaneously. Therefore, there is an individual assigned to govern each aspect of the business and he/she reports to the president directly.
Planning
Allen described planning as "meeting with the chosen subordinate to describe the task and to ask the subordinate to devise a plan of action." The interview process is...
