Disparity and “The Color Purple”
The movie, “The Color Purple”, tells the story of Celie, a Black woman in the South in the early twentieth century. Blacks in the South at that time were not treated as citizens and Black women were not even valued as human beings, not even amongst black men. The story focuses on the rampant abuse, rape, and general attitudes towards Black women and young girls in the South during the time period from 1909 to the late 1930’s. The law did nothing to protect these women and girls.
