Don’t mess with Oviedo Chickens!
A few years ago, sometime around my twenty second birthday, I decided to commit the most horrible of crimes, at least in the small city of Oviedo. My best friend Rebecca and I decided to go down the road to Oviedo; five minutes away from where we lived, to see if we can catch chickens for a Humanities photography project. The plan seemed simple; go down the road, catch a chicken, take a few pictures, and let her go. Who knew that our little plan would come with a special visit from a police officer and a crowd of angry locals ready to watch our penalty for our horrendous action.
Oviedo is like any other town in central Florida. They have there malls, stores, movies, and anything else you would find in a city. But drive past the typical stores and malls and you find a small town known for its simplicity. As you drive further into the city, you begin to feel like you’re in the middle of Tennessee. It looks as though everything in the town had stayed the same since the 1960’s, including downtown Oviedo. But the thing that makes this town so unique is there chickens and roosters that wander through the roads and around the stores. I don’t mean one or two. It’s more like nine or ten in every corner. So surely borrowing one chicken for a photo couldn’t be that big of a deal right? Boy was I wrong!
Planning for our adventure was a bit of a new experience. We both had raised chickens growing up but had never gone and caught a wild one. So we decided on the basics; our camera, loaf of bread and lettuce (because we couldn’t quite remember what they ate and didn’t want to spend money on chicken feed) a large blue net and a large cage. With my car trunk filled chicken catching gear, we set off to get ourselves a chicken.
