Driver Logs Keys and Relationships Assignment:
Explanation of Normalization Levels
As any good Database Manager (DBM) will attest, there are times when one must apply normalization to the data within a database, especially if one has a complex database. The process of normalization includes creating tables and establishing relationships between those tables according certain rules known as normal forms (Pratt & Adamski, p.146). Through the use of Microsoft Access, the author has taken the entities (tables) and attributes (fields) of Huffman Trucking Fleet Driver’s Log and developed the needed keys, relationships, and tables. Furthermore, the author applied certain levels of normalization to the data. Within this paper, the author will explain these levels of normalization and why he thought these levels were sufficient for the data.
Level 1NF:
As the author was creating the ERD and applying normalization to the data, he began by applying 1NF to the data and made sure each entity (table) did not contain redundant data. For the Driver Log, this included removing the attributes: Home Telephone Number, Mobile Telephone Number, Emergency Contact Telephone Number1, and the Emergency Telephone Number2 to their own entity. The author labeled this entity as Employee Phone Numbers and created a new attribute within the Driver table labeled Employee Phone Number ID. This will allow an employee to enter the Driver table and access an infinite number of phone numbers for a specific employee (i.e., 1: M relationship). On the other hand, applying 1NF to the Driving Log resulted in the development of many new entities. Applying this level of normalization resulted in tables such as Driving Time Log, Trailer1, Sleeper Berth Log, On Duty (Not Driving) Log, Off Duty Time Log, and Odometer Mileage Log. Once...
