The 20th Century's Biggest Event
Throughout the 20th century many historical events that would have an impact on the future took place. Some of these include World War II along with the Industrial Revolution; however, the most important event of this time was the invention of electricity. The invention of electricity would lead us to so many new advances in labor, transportation, communication along with modern day conveniences that it would be hard to knock it as a second to any other event in the 20th century. The creation of electricity not only benefited the world but changed the entire way people live. It had such a huge impact that today if our electricity would be taken away, most of us would have no idea what to do with ourselves.
Electricity was a major new form of energy that proved to be of great value since it could be easily converted into other forms of energy, such as heat, light, and motion, and moved relatively effortlessly through space by means of transmitting wires. (Duiker, 20th Century History, Pg. 6) These characteristics and capabilities helped produce a new line of products that would change the face of the modern world or what the world was becoming during this time period. One of its first major benefits was an incandescent filament lamp which could not only electrically light up your house but an entire city. This allowed people longer hours at work, therefore, bringing in more money and when they got home they could still enjoy time with their family without having to light up candles. A second huge benefit that most of my generation would die without is the creation of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell. The benefits of the telephone are apparent, yet, when you think about what it actually does it is amazing. You no longer have to sit and write letters to people and wait for them to receive it days later and then get a response a couple more days later, the telephone is right there to make a call....
