This paper will include an environmental analysis of my current employer, Express Scripts, Inc. (ESI). ESI is a pharmaceutical benefit management company that started in 1986 as a joint venture between a retail chain of more than 100 pharmacies and Sanus Corp. Health Systems. In 1989 it was purchased by New York Life Insurance Company and it became publicly traded company in 1992. (Wikipedia, 1998) Its headquarters is in St. Louis, MO with several other locations throughout the United States and the industries that ESI operates are in healthcare and pharmaceutical.
A pharmaceutical benefit management company is a company that process pharmaceutical claims for members of a network pharmacy and their own mail order pharmacies. ESI also provides a service to manage drug plane for the government agencies, corporations and unions.
To conduct an environmental analysis, you first need to know an organization's external environment. This environment has three components: the remote environment of the company which for ESI is to include all the organization's companies and sites and make them one environment which would be the macroeconomic of ESI. The second component is the industry environment which would be healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. The third component would be the operating environment, which is ESI itself. Add all these together and it will be an environmental analysis of ESI.
Some of the key macroeconomic variables that will affect ESI are unemployment, the national income, the rate of growth, the gross domestic product, inflation and price levels. (Answers, 2007)
