The strategic direction of an organization defines its long-term focus and how it will fulfill its mission. It clearly states how the American Red Cross (ARC) will live up to the high expectations, confidence and trust the American public has placed in the ARC. By its nature, the strategic direction sets forth the priorities of the organization. The ARC’s strategic direction is founded on the bedrocks of the mission, Congressional Charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The direction is also guided and influenced by the implications, opportunities and challenges of the ARC’s operating environment. The strategic direction represents the priorities for all units of the American Red Cross and should be represented in unit-based planning (Strategic Report, 2008).
