Use of the Internet has provided a new manner of conducting business for both the B2B and B2C traders. For success, most businesses have joined the Internet world through web site and search options. By joining the world of Internet commerce, and therefore global commerce, businesses have become subjected to developments in ethical legal and regulatory issues. Privacy, protection, property laws and ethical behavior are all contributing factors to becoming a successful online corporation.
Web based vs. Brick and Mortar
Ethics, laws and regulatory issues of a brick and mortar business are easily defined. “The limits of acceptable ethical behavior and the laws that are adapted in a geographical area are the result of the influences of the area’s dominant culture” (Schneider, 2004, p. 285.) The country (and state) boundaries serve as jurisdictional distinguishers, and treaties exist internationally to serve as governing parties in disputes. There is more difficulty in defining the boundaries in web based companies due to different countries having differing ideas of ethics and differing laws governing business practices. “Some cultures allow their [sic] governments to operate with a high degree of autonomy and unquestionable authority…other cultures…place strict limits on governmental authority” Schneider (2004, p. 287.) and online businesses must be ready to consider the wide variety of regulations and enforcement in the global range.
