Gender Roles

Prior to the twentieth century, men assigned and defined women’s roles. Although men determining women’s behavior affected all women, largely middle class women suffered. Men created somewhat of a prison that subjected and silenced women. Women were imprisoned in the home or private atmosphere, and treated as a servant tending to the needs of the family. An American woman is too often unfit for her duties as a woman, and is possibly of all civilized females the least qualified to undertake those heavier tasks which weigh so heavily on the nervous system of a man. She is not usually up to what nature asks from her as a wife and a mother. Women have difficulties...
