Sudan, the largest country in Africa, also has one of the largest rates of violence on the continent, partially because of the current genocide in Darfur. This genocide, in which many women have been tortured, raped, and sold into slavery, has torn apart thousands of families and communities. Although women have been give the right to vote in Sudan (1964), many injustices occur to them each day that they are virtually powerless to stop. Genocide in Darfur, Sudan, began in February 2003 for a variety of reasons, although the "war" is said to have began as a group called the Darfur Liberation Front claimed credit for an attack on the headquarters of the Jebel Marra DIstrict.
