Homelessness- a real issue
Have you once walked down a street in downtown and seen people on the side walks, sitting there hungry, filthy and cold? Well these people are called “The homeless”. There are several reasons why people are homeless yet people tend to always have one opinion about them: “It’s obvious isn’t it, they’re people who don’t have anywhere to live- the one’s you see begging in the streets,” “Some of them are crazy, they drink a lot, no one wants them because they are too drunk and dirty.” (Kaye, 4) These are the labels that homeless people are given. They are usually classified as addicted to alcohol and drugs, being lazy and unhygienic. However these allegations only apply to a minority of the homeless. The dictionary definition for homelessness is the state or condition of having no home; especially the state of living in the streets (“Dictionary”). This is a very simple definition of homelessness; it only explores one part of the problem. However Going deeper one will see several categories of being homeless other then people on the street. These categories include: roofless people (people sleeping outdoors), houseless (people in shelters, institutions, or short-term accommodation), insecure housing (squatters or people in refugee camps), inadequate housing (people in houses without basic facilities) (Stearman, 4). Homelessness may seem as a small issue because the inner roots of it aren‘t discovered yet, however it is a vast issue and it is a social injustice. It is important to understand how it is a social injustice, discover the catholic church’s view and thoughts on it, and also explore how one can make a difference on a local level as well as a global level.
