There are many dimensions and layers within an organization. There are the obvious elements of an organization such as business strategies, profit margins, and product development that form an organization. One of the most important pieces of an organization is its human capital—in other words, its people. Employees make the organization. Without the employees none of the other elements in an organization can exist. Employees are not machinery or equipment that depreciates over time; they are assets to an organization that appreciate if given the proper nurturing.

Managing the “people” part of an organization is the job of the human resources (HR) department. The 9-Step Problem-Solving model is a valuable tool for HR leaders. To recognize corporate-wide goals, an organization needs to ensure several elements are in place before important goals can be set. A corporation needs to have awareness of how each individual function works toward the whole of the organization, and have assurance that each member has a clear vision of the future-focus. When corporate leaders do not communicate with one another or work within antiquated organizational process, problems can arise when teamwork becomes essential to realize end-state goals.

What follows is an analysis of a corporation undergoing major change, the alternatives to address the problems identified in the scenario, the risks and consequences associated with each alternative, a plan for mitigation, and a problem-opportunity statement that allows for a variety of solutions. The 9-Step Problem-Solving model has allowed the corporation to develop an optimal solution, which is discussed along with the plan for implementation.
