Change is an inevitable part of today’s corporate landscape. Leaders are challenged with developing strategies to implement change and to transform their organizations successfully. Change Management can be described as a structured approach to changing individuals, teams, organizations or societies. It is a strategic approach that enables smooth transition from a current state to a desired end - state. This paper will explore 8 different companies as they navigate through changes that are a result of a business merger. Through our analysis we will identify alternative strategies and techniques that have worked as well as those that have not have proven successful. The leaders in these cases were challenged with the issues of addressing change as they transition via mergers. This paper will compare and contrast strategies adapted in the InterClean scenario, as well as those used by the eight researched companies to develop an understanding of the applications of human capital development.
In the InterClean scenario, the CEO embarked on a new mission and has changed the vision and expectations for his company. With the acquisition of EnviroTech, the organization must now transition by addressing issues such as diversity, practices to effectively manage people, recruitment and evaluation of HRM practices, and their alignment with overall business strategy. For InterClean and all companies undergoing change, leadership must incorporate approaches that will align organizational structure with strategy. To do so, issues that result from mergers and acquisitions, must be identified and addressed. Sun Micro-Systems and HP are two examples of organizations that have done so successfully.
