Comparison and Contrast OR Cause and Effect Essay
There are many comparisons that can in fact be made between The Iliad and the great Viking epic Beowulf. Both epics for instance place a strong emphasis on the glorification of war. Each character in both epics also emulate certain distinct yet similar demographic. Both The Iliad as well as Beowulf use extremely similar motives in order to personify or heighten various themes within the two epics. For instance, a recurring theme in both epics regards armor, and its fundamentality to the occupant. The symbolisms within the epics are also very similar in nature. Both epics seem to use various forms of symbolism in order to make sense of their somewhat abstract ideas (SparkNotes, 2006).
The aspect of war is inherent in both The Iliad as well as Beowulf. The Iliad for instance celebrates warfare just as equally as Beowulf. The entire Iliad in fact is geared toward telling the story of the Trojan War, while the epic Beowulf follows the protagonist on his path to glory. Major emphasis is therefore placed on heroism as well as accomplishment of courageous acts. For instance, both Achilles and Beowulf fight in order to prove their honor and integrity. Both characters seem to accept the notion that if warfare is avoided one can not obtain true stature within their socioeconomic base. When reading such epics one must keep in mind the importance of warfare within the society of the characters (SparkNotes, 2006).
