Software Maintenance and Change Control
In the software development world, one of the most important decisions a Chief Information Officer (CIO) can make is the implementation of a Change Management System (CMS). CMS allows a CIO to control change in the organization, which will help reduce confusion and complexity in developing and maintaining software. It will also facilitate system maintenance procedures such as;
• Restricts access to production source and object code.
• Reduces errors and design defects from being introduce into production
• Prevents the existence of more than one version of source and object coded programs in the production master file (PDF).
• Improves quality and reliability of software
• Increase security and better overall control of software development and system maintenance activities.
• Increase software productivity.
An organization's Network Administrators are using mostly Librarian Function Facility in off-shelve software packages to control changes in system and software functionality. This software packages centralize, tracks, control and automates changes to programs against approved changes. One of the most vulnerable activities in the information system is installing new software and changing existing systems. During the change process, strict controls must be employed to ensure that program changes are properly requested, approved, assigned, coded, tested, documented, and released to production. CMS is a major resource that facilitates these controls.
