In the picaresque novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, the theme of the “running man” is the primary focus. The narrator is constantly running from reality, and from himself. He seems to be captured in a world where he is not accepted, or where he wants to be. In the beginning of the novel, a scene is described where he gets into a confrontation with a white man who does not see him. This adds fuel to the fire of why he feels he is inadequate in this world. From there begins the events of a black man who is constantly trying to find his place in a world that wants to hold him down.
