Leaders & The Leadership Process

The book Leader & the Leadership Process story of Odysseus and his encounter with the Cyclops is an example of a good opportunity gone badly. It started out as good, with having a lot of food and resources. However after meeting Polyphemus, the one-eyed Cyclops, Odysseus and his band were almost devoured completely. The Cyclops had a couple of the men for dinner and breakfast. The problem that Odysseus and his band of men appeared to be insurmountable! Odysseus, however, as the leader of his band, planned and waited for the right moment to trick the Cyclops. To cut the long story short, he led his men out of the cave of the Cyclops after careful planning and implementation. He therefore displayed the character expected from a leader.
Running an organization in the twenty-first century is the same. There may be no physical Cyclops around but there are a number of caves that may lure the unwary into going into the caves because of the temptation of good things. However, the leaders of the many organization's realize the danger too late and before they know it, they need to make important sacrifices and think of a good strategy to deal with the proverbial Cyclops.
The 21st Century does have its share of Cyclops in the world and they can be found in places where they are least expected. As such, organizations would do well to recognize them in order to avoid them and prepare for them in the case that they strike at the heart of the organization. As they say in the games of basketball and football, "a good defense is a good offense."
Due to the different trends and processes introduced by the 21st century, the need for effective leadership becomes more important than ever. This is further complicated by the increasing modernization, change, and the different trends of technology occurring all over the world, which become the source of challenges and issues.
