Overfishing is the practice of commercial and non-commercial fishing which depletes a fishery by catching so many adult fish that not enough remain to breed and replenish the population. Overfishing exceeds the carrying capacity of a fishery. Overfishing is a non-sustainable use of the ocean. The practice of overfishing will result in the extinction of marine life and the destruction of our oceans habitats. In order to stop or at least slow down this environmental and economical catastrophe a sustainment plan and must be made and action must be taken. The plan below is meant to educate the community about the problems that result from overfishing and to offer a plan to maintain healthy stocks of fish that are important to commercial, recreational and subsistence fisheries. By repairing our oceans fish stocks we will increase long-term economic and social benefits in our communities as well as in the nation from living marine resources.

Action Items (In Order) Action Steps Timeline
Research and identify the types of fish affected and methods of fishing used in the problem areas as well as the environmental and economical effects of overfishing Review websites and journals, conduct interviews with fishermen and community leaders. Month 1-2
Develop an educational program about the environmental and economical effects of overfishing Create a presentation including steps that can be taken to reduce the level of the problem of overfishing. Explain the environmental and economical benefits in the long-term. Month 1-3
Schedule a date and time for presentation of educational program. Attend town hall meeting and schedule a meeting next month with town officials and community members. Month3-4
Identify and invite community leaders as well as people who work in the fishing industry Research to find out how many fisherman in community, invite government officials and fisherman. Month 4
