An Orwellian Prediction
Thomas Hobbs an English philosopher believed that every government began in a state of nature. He also believed that for any government to pull themselves out of a state of nature the citizens would have to give up some of there own personal freedoms and rights for good of the nation. Much like in George Orwell's book 1984 Big Brother believes that for the greater good of the nation the government must take control of their citizens during a time of crises. In turn the government keeps the citizens in a constant state of emergency by warring with Eurasia or Eastasia allowing the government to put restrictions and barriers on citizens' rights. The governments three slogans war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength show that even though they completely contradict themselves they are all followed by the citizens for the greater good of the nation.
Since the creation of government; rulers, kings, presidents or dictators have put up barriers to restrict the freedoms of citizens during the time of a War. One example is our own president Abraham Lincoln, whom we associate with freedom and equality actually took away rights when enemies against the Civil war made it public. When enemies of Lincoln started to demonstrate and outwardly disagree with Lincoln he would just throw them in jail. He took away the right of habeas corpus which is the right that any person imprisoned has the right to be brought forth and decided by an official if he/ she are legally imprisoned. In the book 1984 War is peace is very present that citizens do not have the chance to commit crimes against the government. The thought police can take you away for the simple mention of wanting to rebel against the government. There is no trial or judges or habeas corpus because the government is scared of anyone even thinking of rebellion.
