My Decision to Pursue an MBA
After graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Business/Accounting (BSB/ACC), I found the market to be limited for entry level accountants. Most employers in my area require a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license to be considered for employment. Therefore, I knew that to increase my income potential and chances for a different career; I needed to obtain a Master of Business Administration (MBA). I also knew it would not an easy task, nor would it be cheap, so I needed to analyze fully the pros and cons before making a final decision.
Part of the requirements to sit for the Utah CPA exam include a “Masters of Business Administration degree from an American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of
Business (AACSB) or Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs
(ACBSP)” (http://www.uacpa.org/i/11Education%26Experience.pdf). This licensure would give me the opportunity for career advancement, job satisfaction and the ability to live pretty much wherever I choose. However, I had to ensure that I would be able to afford the additional cost of my program and have the ability to devote the time it would take to study.
I first went to my employer to determine what programs were available to me through the company. I found that Barrick offers 80 percent tuition and fees education reimbursement for its employees. I also figure that if I take the opportunity to study during my lunch breaks and while commuting back and forth to and from work, I should be able to find the time required to devote to my studies.
