We can turn on our television sets and see agencies helping countries who are experience food shortages which may be due to numerous problems such as existing poverty, poor infrastructure and the countries politics. It has come to many, that we are facing a food shortage in the world. One region of the world facing such a crisis is Africa where countries such as Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Madagascar have all been experierenced a food shortage in their countries. This paper will describe briefly the food shortage in some African countries and how it affects their community, what contributed to the shortage and recommendations that address those issues. Messer and DeRose (2007) stated a food shortage is occurs when food supplies within a bounded region do not provide the energy and nutrients needed by that region's population. Food shortage is most easily conceptualized as a production problem not enough food is grown to meet regional needs but constraints on importation as well as storage can also cause or contribute to food shortage. Food shortage is also created where food is exported from areas where production is adequate or even abundant. One in six countries in the world faces food shortages this year because of severe droughts that could become semi-permanent under climate change. The chairman of the UN food and agriculture organization’s climate change group said the droughts that have devastated crops across Africa, Central America and south-east Asia are part of an emerging pattern. "Africa is our greatest worry," he said. "Many countries are already in difficulties ... and we see a pattern emerging. Southern Africa is definitely becoming drier and everyone agrees that the climate there is changing. We would expect areas which are already prone to drought to become drier with climate change.
