Steroids: Breakfast of Champions or Cheaters
It’s Thanksgiving at the henderson residence and the 48-inch television set and surround sound can be heard from down the street. Yes, the Colts and Falcons are playing, and football has taken over as the main attraction of the day. Ever since I was young athletics have always played a major part in my life, and they still do. For example, I play intramural soccer and baseball for my fraternity’s teams and probably will until I graduate. However, it was a much simpler time when I was a child and would stretch out my bat and aim for the fences, imitating Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds. At that age I had never heard of steroids and had no idea that part of my heroes’ successes may have been due to the use of these drugs. But now it seems like every time I turn on ESPN, another player has been caught using these them. Because of their greed for higher salaries and drive to win more games, athletes are slowly losing sight of what’s important and destroying the foundation and image of all major sports in the process.
The methods of winning for athletes have no rules and no limits, and unfortunately now, no morals. Athletes feel like the means to a bigger paycheck and higher stats can be found in the use of a needle. Steroids are more prominent than ever in major league sports. The one sport that is getting the most heat right now is Major League Baseball. Even my very own childhood icon, Mark McGwire, is undergoing stringent investigation for using them. Rafael Palmeiro is another professional baseball player who was convicted of using steroids and later testified in court against using them. Soon after the trial, where he proclaimed his innocence, he failed his MLB administered drug test.
