The Catcher In The Rye
Throughout, The Catcher in The Rye, by J.D. Salinger, the reader sees the progressing trials and tribulations that Holden experiences. J.D Salinger captures the pain and disparity that Holden has trouble with in this coming of age story. The intimacy created with Holden's emotions in this book allows for the reader to grasp a deeper connection with his character. Therefore, everything that underlines the surface of Holden is seen through depression, realization and regret in his struggle to move on.
Holden experiences depression throughout the book. He needs somebody to talk to and confide in, but he does not know how to communicate with people well enough to get them to take him seriously and help him with his problems. Holden and Sally went to skate at the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center and he started going off talking about leaving and going away and marrying someone who does not talk and if they must talk to him they have to write it down on a piece of paper. "
Don't you want to go with me? Say so, if you don't". "It isn't that. It isn't that at all." Old Sally said. I was beginning to hate her, in a way. "We'll have oodles of time to do those things-all those things. I mean after you go to college and all, and if we should get married and all. There'll be oodles of marvelous places to go to. You're just". "No, there wouldn't be," I said "It'd be entirely different." I was getting depressed as hell again.' (Salinger 132-133) Since, Holden's communication was off between him and Sally that forfeited his chances of having someone to confide in it pushed her further away rather then pulling her closer. This shows his depression and how he cannot handle relationships.
There are moments where Holden where Holden's mood holds him back from doing something. "Jane Gallagher. Jesus." I couldn't get her off my mind. I really couldn't. " I ought to go down and say hello to her, at least." "Why the hell don't cha instead of keep saying it?"...
