As Winston Smith’s thoughts and attitudes change, his body also changes. In George Orwell’s, Nineteen Eighty-Four Winston's body provides the reader with an image of his state of mind. In part one of the novel, Winston’s body demonstrates how unhappy he is towards his living conditions and the party. In the second part of the novel, as Winston falls in love, he forgets about his prior disputes with the party and his body reflects his feelings. In the third and final section of the novel, as Winston is recovering from his thought crimes, he is punished and is starved. This not only mentally disturbs Winston, it scares him physically.
