Total Quality Management
Introduction
The business world of today is fiercely competitive in almost every industry, be it domestic or international, regardless of the product or service. Organizations of all scales are faced with numerous emerging trends and innovations that impact its marketing mix. Still, what remains at the heart of business is attaining, maintaining, and increasing customers for its products. For the United States, many decades ago this task came with little competition due its global stronghold within the manufacturing industry. The country was teeming with buyers that used their money for whatever the United States produced, and quality was not a concern. In a position such as this, the organization’s interests are prime, and product quality or customer requirements are less attended. Unfortunately, US manufacturers missed the importance of quality as a tactical approach to achieving business goals (University of Phoenix, 2005).
However, as other countries entered the industry, their attention to a better product, and the customer’s interests diminished the stronghold once possessed by the United States. These are opposing management styles, traditional and quality. It is the premise on which I will discuss Total Quality Management (TQM). This will include a definition of TQM, the impact of globalization on quality, a comparison and contrast of traditional management and quality focused management styles, and the role of TQM within my own organization.
Definition
The practice of TQM may be considered a style of management, which has a central focus on providing customers with products and services that satisfy their needs. Essentially, the practices of the organization are set forth in order to consistently deliver upon or exceed the customer’s requirements.
