Wine
Wine was first made over 6,000 years ago; evidence that Vitis vinifera vines were cultivated in Mesopotamia and Egypt at least 6,000 years ago. Vitis vinifera vines quickly spread to different regions because it gave economical production and the grapes were relatively easily moved and traded. As populations moved westward the vines were than introduced to Greece, Italy and North Africa. This played a major role in the ancient history of wine. Later, As the Roman Legions conquered much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, they took grapevines with them and they became to produce wine themselves. With the continuing move in different regions and climates, the vines began to spread and to develop in their surroundings. As Europeans moved into different regions in the world, they also took cuttings with them. With the way history of wine has been portrayed and followed through the year’s playes a major role in the development of the modern wine industry. (CW)
As time goes on wine continues in history with The Spanish Mission System. The Spanish Mission System laid the foundation for grape growing and wine production in the California. Franciscan Monks established a series of Missions throughout California between 1769 to 1823. The Franciscans used native labor to plant a variety of agricultural products along with livestock such as cattle, sheep, orchards, grains and vineyards. In 1779, the first vines were planted by Father Junipero Serra at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Simple table wines were made using the Criolla variety. (CW)
