And you think your job is hard
It starts with the girl coming to the interview chewing gum, dressed in clothes that she probably wore to the club the night before, and last but not least she was late. I like when they call you and give you an excuse like "I am sick to my stomach because I was trying to suck gas from someone's car so I could get to work and now I am sick, so I cannot make it in." On the other side of that double edge sword, I get that almost perfect, polite, hard working, customer oriented, ready to make money so they can feel independent kid that I wish I could clone. Last but not least are the customers that think that you are on the show "Americas Next Top Chef" and that their food is supposed to come out perfect. Being a restaurant manager is more than just walking around talking to customers. It is more than just giving directions and doing orders. It is more than looking pretty.
When you are interviewing for a management job for the restaurant industry, you get caught up in the fact that you will be a manager and you will be making great money. Those head hunters know exactly who to look for; young and fresh out of high school or young and fresh out of college or old and cannot find another job. Well I was young and fresh out of high school when they discovered me. Little did know what I was getting into, because far as I could see the manager that I worked for made it seem so easy. So I was caught in the web of the restaurant at 18 years old. It did not take long before I was the general manager of one the restaurants that I worked for. That was my dream at the time; I used to say all I want is my own store. Well it happened. Being a General Manager is not all that I thought it was going to be.
