Zero Tolerance Policy
In 1944, the Congress passed a bill entitled the “Safe and Drug-Free School Act.” In this act it stated that any students, who are found with drugs or weapons, should be expelled. If the school does not expel the student, the school will lose its federal aid. According to this act, most of schools in the country are adopting a policy called a “Zero Tolerance Policy” which has the same function as the Safe and Drug-Free School Act. Because it is a new policy, it contains a lot of problems, and many people have many queries about whether the policy benefits the students or harms the students. Now we will exposes and analyze the pros and cons of the Zero Tolerance Policy and see whether it benefits the students or it affects negatively to the students.
There are many advantages of the Zero Tolerance Policy. First, schools will be safer, according to the story about schools in Baltimore that are using the Zero Tolerance Policy. The officials there said the criminal activity decreased 31 percent in the city's high schools. In another similar case in the Curie High School, students there were saying that after the school adopted the Zero Tolerance Policy the school became safer. Secondly, schools will gain money if they expel students who are found with weapons or drugs. Finally, the policy will makes the students improve their grades.
First of all, the Zero Tolerance Policy will decrease the crimes and the drug use and make schools safer. Before the Zero Tolerance Policy came out, crimes happened in schools all around the country. In 1999, two students at Columbin High School armed themselves with weapons and bombs and attacked the students and teacher in school. Also, in Arkansa, two students shot and killed four students and teachers in their high school.
