What is an Auteur? Comment on the creative and artistic vision of an auteur director by closely referring to the stylistic and thematic elements present in three of that director’s films.

An auteur is a creative director and is the French word for author. Auteur is someone who doesn’t make films using the genre method and expresses their personal vision and aspects within their films. For example auteur films are normally known to us as unusual, unpredictable and different whereas genre films are normally set out with a certain formula for that type of genre film making it look slick and professional. Also genre films are aimed at a mass audience around the world due to the fact that genre films can be predictable as they go by generic elements and we know what type of film to expect when watching it. Whereas auteur films are for more of a niche audience as they do not go by generic elements therefore not everyone enjoys these types of films.

To help answer this question I shall be looking at three films which have been produced by an auteur director (Werner Herzog) these films include Fitzcarraldo, The Engima of Kaspar and Woyczek.

I am going to talk about the style of the film which refers to the look and feel of the film as this is important due to the locations, casting, editing of scenes, as I shall be looking at the themes of the films referring to the ideas which are present as all three films were made by the same auteur director and will be looking at some of the thematic elements and the general way the director looks at life.

Fitzcarraldo

Fitzcarraldo being the first film I looked at didn’t appeal to me as it was very different to watching a genre film and wasn’t how I expected it to be therefore making the decision that these films are for the type of people that enjoy these type of films.
