SWOT ANALYSIS THE ENVIRONMENT
STRENGTHS: EXAMINES LIBRARY ITSELF
• Support and commitment from elected members.
• Support from Council staff, particularly General Manager and Directors.
• Department status enhances the library’s profile - able to achieve more, get more done, receive funds.
• Excellent library staff - skilled and enthusiastic.
• Financial commitment from Council has been stable.
• Great sense of success - much has been achieved in the nine years the library has been operating. The library has come a long way in a short time - new building; introduction of new collections and new technology.
• Good teamwork exists within the staff. We now have a very dynamic team that works together as a whole.
• Level of communication within the library is good, but there is still room for improvement. E-mail within the organisation will hopefully improve communication.
• There is a strong commitment to customer service. The library has become very sensitive to customers’ needs e.g. changes to renewals, increasing number of items able to be borrowed, use of comments box.
• Growth in service provision, enhanced by the new spacious building at Merrylands.
• New top of the range colour photocopier and extra black and white photocopier available at Merrylands. Latest model black and white photocopiers were introduced at all branches in May.
• Communication between Council and the Library Service has improved.
WEAKNESSES: EXAMINES LIBRARY ITSELF
• Collection still needs to be developed particularly areas such as Basic English.
• Low per capita funding compared with other libraries.
• Perception that our department is expensive to run. We need to raise more revenue.
