Buying a computer for some people can be an absolute nightmare. To get over this purchase paralysis, start asking your self a few basic questions. What will the computer be used for? What types of software will you be using most? Do you need it for word processing, graphics, or multimedia? Do you want to pay bills online, play games, communicate with relatives via email or access your work from home? There are three basic things to look for in a computer; power, storage, and efficiency. In each case, the more you have the better. Purchasing a computer is not a daunting task if you prioritize your wish list per your personal needs. Knowing what you want will help you purchase the proper machine.
The first thing you want to look for while shopping for a computer is power. Power refers to the processing power of the machine. This resides in a small silicon chip called the microprocessor. The microprocessor is often called the brain of the computer. It executes the instructions in a program. The faster the microprocessor, the faster the computer can execute your instructions. Most computers today have an AMD or Intel based processor. Either processor will perform the same in any application or game. You want at least a 1 GHz minimum 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor. Most of your chips are clocked at different speeds reflecting on the price. The faster the speed the more powerful the computer will be. By 2008, the majority of your processors available for sale will be 64-bit. The 64-bit duel core chip is where the technology is moving to now. Therefore, if the computer you are planning to buy has a 64-bit chip then you are on the right track.
