I was born on October 27th, 1858 in a small apartment on 28 East 20th Street, in New York City, the son of Martha “Mittie” Bulloch Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt Senior. My father was a glass importer. I was the second of four brothers and sisters. Being born slightly deaf, with poor eyesight, asthma and underweight. The cards were stacked against me. As a child, I was known as “Teedie”. I hated being called Teddy. My favorite things growing up were to swim, hunt, horseback ride, box and wrestle. I was never really in good health early in life, but I loved the outdoors. My favorite subject was natural history; loving the authority of checks and balances of the government.
