In Immanuel Kant’s Of National Characteristics he goes out to argue that beauty and culture are reflective of the people of that culture. In the essay he attempts to distinguish different types of beauty and cultural markers for beauty as well as using religion, poetry, art and architecture as markers for racial and nationalistic superiority. Kant goes on to list different cultures and nations and uses these groups as examples to prove his argument. He groups them from European powers: England, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
