Sam Walton was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma in 1918. In 1940 he graduated from the University of Missouri with an economics degree. Sam Walton served as a lieutenant during World War II; he also served as captain for the U.S. Army Intelligence, supervising security for aircraft plants and Prisoner of War camps in California. In 1943 Walton married Helen Robson, daughter of wealthy banker L.S. Robson. In 1945 L.S. Robson lent Walton $20,000, part of what he needed to buy his first store, a Ben Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas.
