An organization's success heavily relies on how well the organization deals with people. This includes customers, business partners and most, employees. To work with people effectively organizations must understand human behavior and be knowledgeable about systems, practices, and theories to build a skilled and motivated workforce. Creating a productive workforce should be a priority for every business and managing personnel can be a very demanding task as there are many aspects to managing human resources.
Team B has benchmarked 10 companies: Marriott Vacation Club, MGM Grand Las Vegas, Microsoft, Continental Airlines, Kimberly Clark Company, FedEx Corporation, Eaton, Unilever, Caterpillar and Xerox in the areas of performance measures, staffing systems, training and development, managing the restructuring process, and management as a sustained competitive advantage. The comparison and contrast of the companies exemplifies the practices of each company to determine which practices were used to build an effective human resource system.
Managing The Restructuring Process
Businesses face many challenges in today's incredibly competitive marketplace. Organizations develop various strategies of approaching these challenges. In order to stay competitive some must restructure their whole organization or just parts. Continental Airlines, Unilever, and Xerox are a few examples of companies that have used the restructuring strategy to stay on top.
As a part of the restructuring process, Continental Airlines, Unilever, and Xerox all performed layoffs and outsourced portions of its businesses. All three companies were forced to eliminate a significant amount of jobs, most in the thousands. This occurrence in each organization had a negative impact at first but it was for the best for the organizations to stay successful.
